Drug abuse: Varsity to introduce stronger measures

When academic activities began last week Monday, some students who violated McPherson University’s rules and regulations as contained in the newly published and distributed Student Handbook, were obviously not on Campus.

They will still be at home with their parents and guardians for awhile, The Communicator authoritatively learnt last night.

Multiple sources confirmed these students faced the newly constituted Student Disciplinary Committee [SDC] in December but some of them who failed could not justify why they failed random drug tests conducted at the University Health Centre.

It was gathered that the SDC had made recommendations for Management approval.

On a mission to clean

The Communicator learnt the Management, through the Students Affairs Division and the Security Unit, would strengthen their synergy to discourage drug usage.

This means more random tests would be carried out in the new year. It also means stronger measure would be introduced in checking students before they move into the Halls of Residence.  Attempts to get the names of the students caught in the web failed as all contacts within the Registry and Students Affairs Division refused vehemently.

“You don't need their names and identity to do your story. Some students were caught, they faced SDC and we have received the Management’s directive for implementation.  Our goal is to transform all the students involved; an officer told our correspondent with a tone of finality.

The current administration is determined to raise a new generation of Nigerians and those who want to act to the contrary must be ready to move to universities where anything goes.

One of the students who faced the SDC on the issue, who pleaded for anonymity asked for prayers and mercies.

“I can't say anything now. Just be praying for me. I need mercy of God. I don't want to disappoint my mum again”, he said sobbing.

The Communicator’s Editor-at-Large, Ayodeji Adesina, urged students who need assistance on how to stop addiction to visit the University Chaplain, Rev. Ibiwunmi Alo for counseling and prayer.
