Vice-Chancellor, McPherson University

In a bid to prepare students for the practical realities of the professional world, McPherson University hosted its annual Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) Orientation at the University Multipurpose Hall on Tuesday, January 23, 2024.

The event, graced by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Francis Adegbaye Igbasan, aimed to provide crucial insights and advice to students embarking on the SIWES program. The occasion was also an opportunity to express gratitude to officials from the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) in Ogun State for their commitment to nurturing the future workforce.

Addressing the audience, Professor Igbasan welcomed everyone and extended appreciation to ITF officials, emphasizing their pivotal role in supporting students' transition from academia to the professional realm. He particularly acknowledged the efforts of Dr. Kayode Olumurewa, the SIWES program coordinator at McPherson University, for his dedication to the program.

While commending the ITF for advocating the creation of avenues for students to acquire industrial skills, Professor Igbasan urged the organization to intensify efforts to ease the transition from school to the world of work. He emphasized the need for legislative intervention to compel organizations to accept SIWES students and provide stipends during training.

Directing his message to the students, the Vice-Chancellor highlighted the significance of the SIWES experience in enhancing their understanding of the work environment. He encouraged them to approach the program with seriousness, viewing it as a crucial aspect of their university education.

"See this as one of the defining moments in your student life and maximize it to the fullest," Professor Igbasan advised, emphasizing the importance of observing processes, keeping lessons at heart, and building a network during the program.

Furthermore, he reminded the students that SIWES is not a time to idly pass, but rather a serious assignment integral to their university education. The Vice-Chancellor urged them to be good ambassadors of McPherson University, emphasizing focus, discipline, diligence, and creativity.

Professor Igbasan expressed gratitude to ITF officials, university management, deans, heads of departments, and lecturers for their dedication to building future champions.

He urged students to actively engage with ITF officials, noting their presence to address any questions.
